Welcome to the extraordinary fly fishing lodge at Xcalak, Mexico.
We were introduced to the lodge by one of our friends and longtime clients that had the good fortune to stay and fish in Xcalak in 2017. During his stay he met the lodge owners and knew right away that we would be interested in representing this exceptional lodge and its crazy awesome flats fishing. Epic is a word that is overused in today’s culture. But there are few better words to describe this fly-fishing resort. This place is Epic!
Originally a small boutique eco hotel, the lodge was recently purchased and renovated by a young American couple. The couple has been fly fishing the area and getting to know the lay of the land for the past 10 years. This unique lodge sits on a beach just 2 kms north of Xcalak, Mexico and a short distance north of Ambergris Caye, Belize.
Xcalak (Pronounced "ish-ka-lak") is an unspoiled tropical paradise located right in the heart of Mayan Yucatan - and at the very southern tip of Caribbean Mexico - merely miles from the Belize border. Xcalak offers adventurers and explorers access to some of the best saltwater flats fishing in the entire world.
Xcalak is the last town in Mexico before you reach Belize along the Caribbean coastline. It is just over 200 miles south of the city of Cancun.
Fly Fishing in Xcalak
The fishery of Chetumal Bay is a picturesque shallow water flats fishery. Our main area of concentration lies in the back bay located directly behind Xcalak. Our two main targets are permit and bonefish. Think permit, permit, permit! If you have ever wanted to chase permit there might not be a better place to do so. The Chetumal Bay fishery has been proven as one of the most reliable and consistent permit fisheries and its uniqueness in many ways makes it one of the best places to chase permit in the world. With the Mexican Navy’s construction of the Zaragoza Canal in 2002 a fish super freeway was created bringing in large numbers of permit to the Bay and increasing the daily exchange of water from the Caribbean creating massive populations of shrimp and crabs. Water depths range from less than 1 ft to over 5 ft. The shallow hard packed flats provide great opportunities to get out of the boat and walk & wade. The fishery supports significant numbers of Baby Tarpon and Snook with most of our shots being in the extensive small local lagoons.
Fly Fishing Guides
The fishing day starts with meeting your guide on our new 200 foot dock directly in front of the lodge. The lodge will supply you with non alcoholic beverages and lunch to take on your fly fishing quest. A typical fishing day has you departing the Lodge at 8:00 AM and returning around 4:00 PM. The boat ride to the vast fishing area in Chetumal Bay is less than 30 minutes. It is important to the lodge owners to support the local economy and be part of the community that they now call home. The Lodge employs the absolute best guides that the region has to offer.
There are 10 enthusiastic, friendly and welcoming guides that have been approved by the lodge. All of the guides have exceptional knowledge of the local flats, lagoons, tides and species. Regardless of whether you are a first time salt water flats fly fisher or an expert looking for an intense flats adventure, a week on the water with anyone of these guides will be the experience of a lifetime.
Sleep each night to the purr of the waves breaking on the Meso American Reef located less than 400 yards off shore. At night, look up to the dazzling, brilliant show of stars and the Milky Way - untainted by light pollution, then down at the magical show of bioluminescence in the water and over to the winking fire flies on the beach. It's magical. Awake each morning to the sun rising over the Caribbean.
The lodge accommodations features six deluxe beachfront rooms right on the Caribbean Sea.
Each room includes two twin extra large beds that can be combined to create one king sized bed. High thread count sheets and multiple plush pillows lie atop the new comfortable mattresses making for a restful nights sleep to prepare for your next day on the water. Each room has a shower with high pressure unlimited hot water and plush bath towels.
WiFi is available throughout the property.
